By Colin Hall £4.95 This book is a nostalgic look at a period not to far back in time but one over which a significant number of changes have been made. The period of which is one of just over ten years from the early 1970's to the early 1980's. Since then the railway landscape has been turned upside down not just in Hampshire but in the country as a whole. Several of the lines shown in this album are now closed. The most notable being the Winchester to Alton line which is now the Mid-Hants steam railway. Freight services are now just a shadow of what they once were seeing first the demise of the short wheel base vacuum braked wagons left over from the steam era then the loss of wagon-load business itself. Many of the trains themselves have disappeared, replaced by the remorseless bid for standardisation. No more the old local favourite classes 07, 33, 50, 73, 74 and Hampshire DEMU's, together with numerous "foreign" visitors classes 25, 31, 35, 40, 45 and 52. Sectorisation and privatisation have successfully brought a more sterile railway scene. So here is a look back at how it was. The Club. An everyday story of trainspotters. The result is the membership of the Surbiton Railway Club. A novel full of humour and situations that you can often relate to. A 'must have' for any one with an interest to railways real or model. An excellent read. |
